Suiting Up for Space: Illustrating NASA's Spacesuit for DK
For "What's It Made Of?" (DK), I created the 3D exploded-view illustration for the Spacesuit spread, breaking down a NASA Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) into its 14 layers, from the gold-coated visor and Kevlar outer shell down to the Gore-Tex, neoprene, and spandex layers underneath, plus the life-support backpack with its cooling tanks and electronics.
The goal was to make something as technical as a spacesuit feel tangible: every helmet, glove, and hidden system floating apart so you can see exactly how the materials work together to keep an astronaut alive in the vacuum of space. It's the kind of visual storytelling I love, turning complex engineering into something anyone can look at and instantly understand.
This is one of 9 illustrations I did for the book, and it's a great example of the technical illustration and 3D visualization work I do at Max Kulich Studio — helping publishers, engineering, and industry clients explain complicated products and systems visually.
What's It Made Of?" is available directly from DK's website.
